Make a Plan

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a great resource for emergency preparedness and disaster response planning. Their provident living website gives direction to families, ward and stake leaders.

The Ward and Stake Emergency Preparedness Guide from providentliving.org, invites leaders to:

  1. Identify likely disasters
  2. Gather critical information
  3. Outline assignments and procedures
  4. Identify emergency communication methods
  5. Encourage member participation

Although wards and stakes should apply this knowledge in preparing for natural or man-made disasters, these tips can be used in any family emergency preparedness plan.

Elder L. Tom Perry taught, “The need for preparation is abundantly clear. The great blessing of being prepared gives us freedom from fear. Start now to create a plan if you don’t already have one, or update your present plan. …The instability in the world today makes it imperative that we take heed of the counsel and prepare for the future.” (If Ye Are Prepared Ye Shall Not Fear, General Conference, October 1995)
